Salary, Benefits and Retirement

SALARY:

  • Academy pay is $33.26 an hour, until sworn in as a police officer
  • Police officer, starting step 1 salary $80,600
  • Police officer, top step salary $107,931 (one step increase annually for seven years)
  • Lateral police officer salary determined by experience, training and education

A Police Recruit is an entry level position and is someone who does not have police/peace officer experience or training within the State of California. This classification applies to police officers from other states and federal law enforcement officers who do not possess a California P.O.S.T. Academy Certificate. The San Jose Police Department does not accept the California P.O.S.T. Waiver. STEP #1:  MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS You must meet the following qualifications. If you meet them, move on to step #2. At least 21 years old at the time of the academy. The mandatory retirement age is 70 years old. A valid United States driver's license. U.S. high school diploma or general education diploma (GED). Waived, if you have a college degree, from an accredited college within the U.S. You must have 40 semester college credits or 60 quarter college credits from a U.S. accredited college or university OR have completed (4) four years of active military duty in the US Air Force, Army, Marine, Navy, or Coast Guard and have received or anticipate receiving an honorable discharge. The Lateral position is someone with police/peace officer experience within the State of California. An Academy Attendee is someone who is currently attending a California P.O.S.T. Basic Academy while an Academy Graduate is someone who has successfully completed a California POST Basic Academy within the last six (6) months. Any Academy Graduate who submits an application beyond six (6) months of their graduation date will have their application reviewed by the current Recruiting Unit Supervisor. Upon review, an Academy Graduate will be required to attend the San Jose Police Academy. The San Jose Police Department does not accept out-of-state lateral police officer transfers or federal law enforcement transfers who have completed the California P.O.S.T .Basic Course Waiver. All law enforcement officers wishing to transfer from out-of-state or from a federal law enforcement agency must apply as police recruit applicant and then attend the San Jose Police Academy. STEP #1:  QUALIFICATIONS You must meet the following qualifications. If you meet them, move on to step #2. Currently employed as a California Police/Peace Officer with a CA Basic P.O.S.T. certificate and has completed a patrol field training program OR Possess a California P.O.S.T. Academy graduation certificate within the last SIX months OR Currently, an attendee at a California P.O.S.T.
