GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:
Designs and develops tooling for support of manufacturing and engineering.  Applies design and manufacturing principles and knowledge areas to conceptualize, design, and optimize tooling required to execute manufacturing process.  Tooling includes composite lamination molds, compression molds, CNC Machine fixtures, drill jigs, assembly fixtures, material handling, and support equipment and other items necessary to facilicate the manufacturing process.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Tool Design Engineer All Levels
The duties and responsibilities listed below are general requirements that apply to all levels of Tool Design Engineer. Each successive level of Tool Design Engineer builds on job functions listed for the previous level.

•    Responsible for design and development of tools needed to facilitate, execute and optimize the manufacturing process.  
•    Proficient in Computer Aid Drafting (CAD) to design, develop and document precise tooling models to fabricate tools.  Dassault Products Preferred (Catia, 3DX)
•    Applications of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), tolerance assessments & accumulation analysis to provide practical but precise tool designs and drawings.  
•    Knowledgeable in lean manufacturing  and Design for Manufacturing concepts to support cost reduction programs and efficient manufacturing process.  
•    Responsible for Tool Design Configuration Control.
•    Ensures that tool design efforts achieve project objectives per schedule, cost and technical requirements.  
•    May be required to estimate cost, material, and/or resource requirements for tool design efforts.  
•    May liaison with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, suppliers, and customers.
•    Contributes to Manufacturing Work Instructions for proper tool use and function.
•    Teams with Environmental Health & Safety group to improve ergonomics and safety considerations for tooling.
•    Contributes to Manufacturing Work Instructions for proper tool use and function.
•    Complies with established Quality Management System procedures.

Tool Design Engineer I
•    Work is generally closely supervised with specific instructions given. 
•    Work generally routine technical tasks of low to medium complexity with appropriate oversight.
•    Intercompany contacts are generally direct lead, project lead, supervisor and other engineers on direct team.   
•    Guidance and mentoring is expected to learn and grow.

Tool Design Engineer II
•    Work with basic oversight and able to work independently and follow documented procedures. 
•    Works various technical tasks of moderate complexity with basic oversight.
•    Intercompany contacts are generally direct lead, project engineer, supervisor and other engineers on direct team.  
•    May work with smaller customers or outside vendors.

Tool Design Engineer III
•    Work with general to minimal oversight, able to work independently, and follow documented procedures. 
•    Works a broad range of technical tasks of moderate to high degree of complexity with general to minimal oversight and an independent approach. 
•    Intercompany contacts are generally direct lead, project engineer, supervisor and other engineers on direct team
•    High degree of critical problem solving expected.  
•    Capable of leading a small team to complete routine tasks.
•    May work with small customers or outside vendors.

Tool Design Engineer IV 

•    Work is performed without appreciable direction and requires minimal oversight.
•    Works a broad range of technical tasks of advanced complexity with minimal oversight and an independent approach. 
•    Solves issues of advanced complexity in a broad range of technical problems.   
•    May lead and direct the work of tool design engineers, provide technical guidance, and mentoring.
•    May represent tool design in complex cross-organizational technical solutions.  
•    High degree of critical problem solving expected.  
•    Has frequent liaison, inter-organizational, and customer contact interactions.  


Tool Design Engineer V
•    Work is performed with general autonomy and little to no oversight.  
•    Considered Subject matter Expert (SME) on Tool Design Discipline/Processes/Procedures and able to create and innovate new processes and procedures as required.  
•    In addition to solving issues of advanced complexity, may be asked to provide innovative solutions to novel problems or create new organizational standards to meet techological challenges.  
•    Leads and directs the work along with providing guidance and mentoring.
•    Acts as prime technical contact on projects/program for tool design, and serves as advisor role to management on incorporation of advanced tooling technologies.  
•    Has frequent liaison, inter-organizational, and customer contact interactions.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Tool Design Engineer I
•    Requires a related BS degree in Engineering or Manufacturing. 
•    Basic knowledge of Computer Aided Drafting, (Catia, 3Dx Preferred)
•    Basic knowledge of measuring instruments.
•    Basic knowledge of GD&T.
•    Proficient MS Word and Excel.
•    May be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance at the appropriate level (requires U.S. Citizenship). 

Tool Design Engineer II
•    Requires a related BS degree in Engineering or Manufacturing.
•    Minimum of 3 years related experience.
•    Mid-level knowledge of CAD (Drafting, 3D Modeling, Surfacing).  Catia/3Dx Preferred
•    Able to translate data using IGES, Step, Model, or other appropriate method.
•    Proficient with measuring instruments.
•    Mid-level knowledge of GD&T.
•    Familiar with Composite part design, composite lay-up, assembly, and mill fixture tooling.  
•    Familiar with PLM systems, Configuration Control
•    May be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance at the appropriate level (requires U.S. Citizenship). 

Tool Design Engineer III
•    Requires a related BS degree in Engineering or Manufacturing.
•    Minimum of 6 years related experience, (4yrs with Masters Degree).
•    Proficient knowledge of CAD (Drafting, 3D Modeling, Surfacing).  Catia/3Dx Preferred.
•    Able to translate data using IGES, Step, Model, or other appropriate method.
•    Proficient with measuring instruments.
•    Proficient knowledge of GD&T.
•    Familiar with Composite part design, composite lay-up, assembly, and mill fixture tooling.  
•    Familiar with PLM systems, Configuration Control.
•    May be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance at the appropriate level (requires U.S. Citizenship). 

Tool Design Engineer IV
•    Requires a related BS degree in Engineering or Manufacturing 
•    Minimum of 11 years related experience, (9yrs with Masters Degree).
•    Advanced knowledge of CAD (Drafting, 3D Modeling, Surfacing).  Catia/3Dx Preferred.
•    Able to translate data using IGES, Step, Model, or other appropriate method.
•    Strong knowledge of measuring instruments.
•    Proficient knowledge of GD&T.
•    Proficient with composite manufacturing and plastic compression mold tooling.
•    Proficient with PLM systems, Configuration Control
•    Proficient with CNC machine fixturing and tooling.
•    Proficient with assembly tooling and fixturing.
•    Proficient MS Word and Excel.
•    May be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance at the appropriate level (requires U.S. Citizenship).

Tool Design Engineer V
•    Requires a BS degree in Engineering or Manufacturing.
•    Minimum of 16 years related experience, (14yrs with Masters Degree).
•    Knowledge and understanding in Advanced Tooling Technologies.
•    Experience Writing Processes and documenting Knowledge Areas. 
•    Advanced knowledge of CAD (Drafting, 3D Modeling, Surfacing).  Catia/3Dx Preferred.
•    Able to translate data using IGES, Step, Model, or other appropriate method.
•    Strong knowledge of measuring instruments.
•    Proficient knowledge of GD&T.
•    Proficient with composite manufacturing and plastic compression mold tooling.
•    Proficient with PLM systems, Configuration Control.
•    Proficient with CNC machine fixturing and tooling.
•    Proficient with assembly tooling and fixturing.
•    Proficient MS Word and Excel.
•    Experience with leading groups to complete organizational/program objectives.
•    May be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance at the appropriate level (requires U.S. Citizenship).

WORK ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
•    Office and or manufacturing environment.
•    Ability to stand and sit for long periods of time.
•    Ability to perform repetitive motion (keyboarding, 10-key, phones).
•    Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
•    Occasional outside contact with customers and suppliers.
•    May work extended hours or weekends and travel occasionally. 

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:  
•    Up to 15% may be required to support KUAS manufacturing sites, vendors or customers
