Under general direction, the Highway Maintenance Manager manages and coordinates the activities and operations of a Highway Maintenance section including roadway and bridge maintenance, tree and landscape maintenance, or roadway drainage systems and coordinates assigned activities with other divisions, departments, outside agencies, and the general public.
There is an additional 3.35% Management Differential which is added to the posted salary for this class.
Knowledge of
- Methods, materials, and equipment used in the construction and maintenance of pavement, roadside appurtenances (e.g. culverts, ditches, shoulder grades, sidewalks, fences, guardrails, retaining walls), bridges, roadway drainage systems, tree and landscape areas and vegetation and debris removal
- The operation, maintenance, capacities, and limitations of maintenance equipment
- Principles and practices of management and organizational theory, including planning, organizational design, business finance, business development, project management, and organizational effectiveness
- Principles and practices of supervision, discipline, leadership, mentoring, and training
- Applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations including those pertaining to hazardous materials, the illegal discharge of pollutants into the environment, and the use, storage, disposal and reporting requirements of herbicides and pesticides
- Operational characteristics, services, and activities of the assigned Highway Maintenance section
- Safety principles and practices
- Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and other specialized applications related to area of assignment
- English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation

Minimum Qualifications
Either: 1. Two years of full-time paid experience employed by the County of Sacramento in the class of Highway Maintenance Supervisor or Tree Supervisor.
Or: 2. Two years of full-time paid experience supervising crews engaged in road, bridge, stormwater utility, airfield or tree and landscape maintenance or road construction.
