Job Description

The City of Sacramento, Department of Utilities is seeking to fill the position of Supervising Generator Technician in the Operations and Maintenance Support unit.  This position is responsible for planning, scheduling, and providing supervision for the activities of a crew.  The position also performs a variety of skilled and technical tasks in the preventive, corrective maintenance and modification of Internal Combustion (IC) engines, diesel generators, and other associated equipment. Responsibilities include the more technical and complex assignments such as emission testing to ensure IC engines are in compliance with regulatory agencies; and, interpreting oil sample analysis, schematic wiring to isolate and diagnose problems, and submit work order for repairs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Plan and schedule work assignments and supervise staff performance.
  • Develop goals and objectives for the unit and evaluate employee performance.
  • Prepare detailed cost estimates and make recommendations regarding feasibility of major repairs.
  • Procure parts and supplies related to repair and replacement of IC Generators and associated equipment.
  • Establish and conduct training programs.
  • Provide safety standards.
  • Develop preventative and corrective maintenance schedules for IC engines, diesel generators, and other associated equipment.
  • Review, assist with project documentation and the preparation of bids for Capital Improvement Projects.
  • Perform routine inspections and make modifications to IC engines, diesel generators, including associated equipment and control systems.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS) and annunciator panels.
  • Make electrical and mechanical wiring modifications to diesel control circuits.
  • Conduct automatic and manual transfer tests of simulated power outages to ensure generators are functioning properly.
  • Perform emission testing on IC engines to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies such as Sacramento Metro Air Quality Management District (SMAQMD) California Air Resources Board (CARB), and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
  • Interpret oil sample analysis, diagnose problems, and submit work order for repairs.
  • Perform load testing on units to identify possible problems and prevent wet stacking. Transport and dispose hazardous materials
  • Schedule tests on emergency equipment. Interpret schematic wiring to isolate problems.
  • Other related duties may also be performed; not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each individual holding this classification.

 EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

 Education - Successful completion of a two-year technical electrical or mechanical trade school; or military training/ apprenticeship.

AND

Experience - One year of experience as a Senior Generator Technician with the City of Sacramento. Or three years of experience performing a complex range of skilled and technical tasks equivalent to or higher than a Senior Generator Technician with the City of Sacramento; skilled in the maintenance, servicing, and repair of diesel and other gaseous IC engines and other electrical systems related to light and heavy duty machinery and mechanical equipment, including one year as a supervisor or serving in a lead capacity.
