The **RN Advice Nurse** Practices registered nursing within a care center and/or via the telephone utilizing the nursing process, input fromclinicians, and the organizationally approved nursing guidelines/ protocols within scope of practice. Must meetestablished benchmarks as defined by SMF care center standards.
Accurately communicates and documents assessments and recommended interventions within identified
timeframes, consistently consulting with the client's clinician regarding medical conditions of concern according to
Conducts telephone assessments of patients with acute and/or chronic health problems.
Performs direct patient care, including any follow-up activities as needed.
Provides information regarding prescribed or over the counter (OTC) medications and therapies.
Provides patient and family education as requested. This may involve conducting research of available information
or community resources.
Provides training, direction and guidance to clinical staff as needed or requested.
Schedules and confirms appointments and test or connects the client to the local EMS system as indicated.
Triages and advises patients to the most appropriate level of care.
**MINIMUM POSITION REQUIRMENTS**
**Education/ including Licensure/ Certification/ Registration:**
Current licensure as an RN in the state of California. BLS Healthcare provider. Must pass SMF pre-screen test, Clinical Core Competencies Assessment and annual Basic Skills Assessment Test. ACLS is strongly preferred and may be required in some care center settings. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
Knowledge of scope of practice for RNs in the State of California. Professional knowledge of clinical nursing protocols with emphasis in the areas of disease processes, emergencies, health sciences, and pharmacology. Knowledge and understanding of managed care concepts strongly recommended. Knowledge of what medical symptomology constitutes urgent/emergent care. Knowledge of medical terminology and abbreviations. Knowledge of clinical protocols for vital signs. Knowledge of normal values for vital signs (BP, Pulse, Respirations, Temps). Knowledge of medical positioning for patients. Knowledge of scheduling practices/referrals for physician offices preferred. Knowledge of effective teamwork practices between front and back office staff.
Three to five years of practical nursing experience. Ambulatory, outpatient or emergency room care experience preferred. One-two (1-2) years of practical experience as an RN in a physicians office or medical office setting preferred.
Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a complex fast-paced environment and take appropriate actions in emergent situations. Must be able to work within established timeframes with attention to detail and accuracy. Demonstrates high level of skill in creative problem solving, setting priorities and the ability to use these skills in an environment where the nature of patient inquiries is unpredictable. Ability to type and demonstrate computer skills. Demonstrated and proficient skills in all steps of the nursing process. Excellent oral and written communication skills, interpersonal relationship skills,
provision of care, and provision of advice and instruction via telephone. Customer service/people skills sufficient to deal with patients on the telephone who need reassurance and/or advice regarding health issues. Ability to effectively collaborate with other healthcare team members. Ability to work with a variety of personalities in the medical office setting. Ability to type 35-40 words per minute and feel comfortable with clinical setting computer operations.
