The **Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse (WOCN)** provides a comprehensive program which includes:
+ Patient care consultation and/or treatment for wounds.
+ Consultation and teaching for management of patients with a new or existing fecal or urinary diversion (ostomy). This role includes determination of supplies needed to meet inpatient needs and needs for patient discharge.
+ Facilitation of appropriate specialty bed utilization through patient assessment for risk factors and collaboration with hospital staff and physicians regarding patient care to minimize the risk of skin breakdown.
+ Collaboration and consultation with physicians regarding patient wound care to promote optimal healing.
+ Collaboration with surgeon and patient to determine best placement of diversion/ostomy site preoperatively.
+ Collaboration with the Product Review Committee to oversee the provision of efficient and cost effective wound care and ostomy care supplies.
+ The Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse Specialist assesses education needs of nursing staff regarding wound care and ostomies, and assists with or provides programs and inservices as needed to maintain or enhance staff competency and improve patient care outcomes.
+ This position requires the ability to work varied hours and to commute between Hospital Campuses to provide coverage for patient care according to patient volume and needs.
**MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS:**
Graduate of an accredited registered nurse program. Current California RN license or interim permit. Current WOCN certification required or Nurse Practitioner with no less than one year working in a wound care setting. (For perdiem WOCN positions, RNs with partial (wound) certification may be considered.)
Acute care experience preferred. Experience in area of clinical specialty preferred.
Knowledge of nursing process in the assessment of physical and psychological needs of patients and their significant others. Demonstrate basic nursing skills. Aware of adult learning principles in providing teaching of patients and their significant others. Current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (BLS-HCP), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred in specialty areas.
